Talk Program on Culture, Language and Society
The Regular Club Meeting No. 1505 (38th of RY 2025/26) of the Rotary Club of Yala was held on 3rd April 2026 at Hotel Goodwill, featuring a talk program on the topic “Culture, Language and Society” by Ms. Aruna Nakarmi, an archaeologist and culturist, who holds a Master’s degree in Nepalese History, Culture, and Archaeology.
Ms. Aruna Nakarmi explained that culture is the way of life where the values, beliefs, rituals, traditions, heritage, language, and daily practices of a community are expressed and preserved across generations. She highlighted languages are not merely tools of communication but carriers of history, knowledge, rituals and traditions. The loss of a language therefore , is not merely the end of words; it is the disappearance of an entire knowledge, culture, heritage and civilization of the community.
She talked about the caste system and the occupations traditionally associated with each caste, the renovation and conservation of historical monuments, World Heritage Sites, the architecture of Newari traditional houses, the preservation of cultural traditions and rituals, both tangible and intangible heritage, need to transfer culture and knowledge to the next generation to keep it alive and meaningful.
